Obituary for Arvid (Tony) Anthony
Arvid “Tony” R. Anthony, 92, of Peoria, IL passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Liberty Village-Manor Court in Peoria. He was born October 9, 1923, in Keokuk, IA to Alfred and Gladys Russell Anthony. He married Evelyn E. Burkhart April 23, 1944; she preceded him in death on November 30, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce (Gordon) Wassell of Morton, IL; granddaughter, Lindsey (Dustin) Birkel of Edwards, IL and great-grandson, Lucas Birkel of Edwards, IL. Tony attended Iowa State University and he was also a Caterpillar Apprentice Program Graduate. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific and was honorably discharged December 9, 1945. He worked as an Engineer for Caterpillar, Inc., retiring in 1983 after 36 years of dedicated service. Tony enjoyed woodworking, furniture making, painting and drawing. Tony and his wife were both long-time friends of and volunteers at Wildlife Prairie Park. Tony received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1994 for his many years of service. He enjoyed driving the train and doing maintenance and gardening work for the Park. He had a lifelong love of music and played the clarinet, violin and organ. In his retirement years, he played the organ at numerous nursing homes and other local events with the L.I.F.E. Group. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 263 (Valley of Peoria) and United Presbyterian Church in Peoria where a memorial service will be held Friday, October 16, 2015 at 11 a.m. Rev. Dr. Stephen McKinney-Whitaker will officiate. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Swan Lake Cemetery in Peoria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Easter Seals of Central Illinois or Harbor Light Hospice of Illinois. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the care Tony and Elaine each received from all the staff at Liberty Village-Manor Court and Hawthorne Inn over the last several years.
