Born on November 16, 1937 in Tuscarora, rural Peoria County, IL, Barbara was the eldest child born to Fredrick Reader and Inez (Ranieri) Reader.
Barbara is survived by one brother, Fred Reader of Pekin, IL; one son, Dick Owens of Metamora, IL; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, David J. Owens of Portland, OR; her mother and father, and one brother, Jerry Reader of Pekin, IL.
Barbara worked for the US Postal Service in Pekin for 14 years, and for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for 22 years, retiring in 2000. Following her retirement, Barbara worked as a freelance writer for the Pekin Times.
Active in many civic endeavors, Barbara served as a treasurer and a member of the board of directors for the Tazewell County Government Employees Credit Union for several years, was elected a Pekin Park Board member for 12 years, and was a past recipient of Woman of the Year award by the local chapter of the American Businesswomen’s Association.
An active conservationist, Barbara participated in several US. Park Service trail maintenance projects in the Western United States, and was an avid supporter of conservation causes.
Barbara had a lifelong love of dogs, wolves, and small woodland animals.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, IL. Father Michael Andrejek will officiate.
