Obituary for Bernadine Coates
Bernadine Mildred Coates passed on peacefully on May 30, 2016 at home on the family farm. Born in Peoria, IL on April 13, 1920 to Fred and Ethel Adkinson (McGrew), she lived 96 years, dedicating her entire life to her family. Lovingly known to generations simply as “Gram,” she left for her eternal home while surrounded by the family she so dearly loved. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, DeWitt Clinton Coates; two brothers, Fred “Snook” Adkinson and Harry “Bo” Adkinson; and two sons, Ronald Lee Coates and Gary Wayne Coates. She is survived by her brother Charles (Honey) Adkinson; her daughter, Sharon (Tom) Rakestraw; her son, Ed (Mary) Coates, 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, and many other family and friends. She will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. But the valuable lesson she taught us of loving and caring for each other, no matter what, will live on in our hearts forever.
