Obituary for Carl Yock
Carl George Yock, 93, of Pekin died peacefully during the early morning hours Monday, November 16, 2015 at home. He was born on May 27, 1922 in Pekin, IL, to Joe and Elizabeth (Wenisch) Yock, immigrants from Apetlon, Austria. He married Marie Pogioli on February 1, 1947 in Pekin, IL. She preceded him in death on January 11, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his father Joe Yock Sr. on Dec. 10, 1937; mother Elizabeth Yock on Dec. 24, 1977; brother John Yock on July 2, 1957; sister Elizabeth (Yock) McCurdy on May 31, 2003; brother Joe Yock on Oct. 2, 2015, niece Victoria Pogioli and nephew John McCurdy. He is survived by his son, Thomas (Pat) Yock of Boulder, Colorado and daughter, Mary Kay (Tom) Pilat of Peoria, grandchildren Marjorie Oliver, Amy McMorrow, Matthew Yock, Sarah Fenwick, Eric Pilat, and Allyson Nolle, 15 great grandchildren (Brian, Catherine, Alicia, Thomas, Meredith, Alec, Nathan, Lena, Henry, James, Charlie, Ted, Benjamin, Rory and Nora), many dear nieces and nephews and many faithful friends. Carl graduated from Spalding Institute in Peoria in 1940 and entered an apprenticeship with Caterpillar Tractor Co., working in the machine shop, planning and future planning departments until his retirement in 1981. He attended Sacred Heart Church in Pekin and later St. Joseph Catholic Church until his death. His choir family there was very dear to him, and he sang in the choir for nearly 70 years. He helped spearhead the accessibility renovation of the choir loft several years ago. In earlier years, he was one of the founders of the United Way-Pekin and a member of the Elks Club. Carl served in the US Army as an infantry sergeant from 1943 until 1946 stationed in the southern Philippines/New Guinea. In 2013 he felt privileged to be selected for the inaugural Greater Peoria Honor Flight to Washington DC with his brother Joe, who was 100 at the time. Carl devoted his life to his family. He was a self made man. He tackled challenges analytically and even built his own home in the early 1950's with no prior building skills, learning as he went and enjoying some help from family and friends. Over the years he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and sharing his tomatoes, church involvement and all kinds of projects for his kids, grandkids and other family members. He thoroughly enjoyed his 90th birthday party and having children invade his home. Whether we called him Dad, Grandpa Yock, Papa Carl, Uncle Carl or simply Carl, all shared in his love, help and humor. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Father Michael Andrejek will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin with Military Honors. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 20, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Abts Mortuary in Pekin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Organ Fund in his name.
