Obituary for Carol Johnson
Carol Ann Johnson, 81, of Peoria, IL went to her Eternal Home Friday, January 9, 2015 at Grand View Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Peoria, IL. She was born April 23, 1933 in Peoria, IL to Joseph and Bessie Brown McDermott. She married Clifford E. Johnson June 17, 1967 in Peoria, IL., he survives. She is also survived by her two nephews, Patrick McDermott of South Carolina and Michael McDermott of Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joseph. Carol was a graduate of Manual High School in Peoria, IL. While going to school she worked at Szold's on the switch board, later working as a secretary at CILCO for several years. She received her Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Teaching Science of Education at Illinois State University. She taught for District 150 at Washington Middle School. Later she taught a special program at Dunlap Grade School. She was active in Christian Endeavor, Christian Business Women and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship as a founding member of the Peoria Prayer & Support Group as well as serving many student training events. She was also a member of Bacon Memorial Mission. She taught Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Vacation Bible School for many years at First Covenant Church in Peoria. Upon retirement Carol was an active member of Peoria Prairie Storytelling Guild. She enjoyed using her skills to entertain and inform her audience both for adults and children. Carol loved the Lord, her church family, and many friends and children including the neighborhood kids she would meet with at their school bus. She was an avid reader and loved to give books away. Cremation has been accorded and the Service to Celebrate Carol's life will be Saturday, January 31, 2015 with Visitation at 10:00 AM, Service at 11:00 AM, and Fellowship time afterwards at First Covenant Church at the corners of Knoxville Ave. and War Memorial Dr. in Peoria. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Covenant Church or InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, ministry at Bradley University or Cedar Campus, PO Box 7895, Madison WI 53791 in her name.
