Obituary for Charles Heidewald
Charles (Chuck) Edward Heidewald, 83, of Peoria, Illinois peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Liberty Village of Peoria’s Manor Care with his family by his side. He was born August 12, 1930, in Peoria to William and Lois (Charvat) Heidewald. He married Nancy Lee VanBruwaene at Saint Mary's Cathedral on July 30, 1955. She survives and resides at Liberty Village, Hawthorn Inn. Also surviving are their five children, Catherine Edmundson (Rob) of Dunlap, Claire Putman (Dennis, deceased) of Germantown Hills, Christine (Dennis) Sluder, of Gilbert, AZ, Paul Charles (Deborah) Heidewald, of Morton, Charlene (Keith) Wagner, of Princeville: 14 grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two siblings, Carol Anderson of Fairview Heights, IL, and John Heidewald of St. Petersburg, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Betty Waldschmidt; Marjorie Watson; Lois Reese; Jane Pritchard; Nancy Duetsch; and Sister Mary Carol. Chuck grew up in West Peoria where he attended Saint Mark Catholic Church and Grade School. He graduated from Spalding Institute in 1949 where he excelled in all types of sports. He completed four years of service in the Korean War with the U.S. Navy where he graduated from the U.S. Navy School of Electronics. Chuck retired from CILCO (Ameren) after 36 years of service in the Electric Meter Department. Chuck and Nancy were active in the Catholic Church where they volunteered in Pre-Cana and as foster parents, raising several foster children along with their own. Chuck was a warm, caring, loving husband and father whose greatest pleasure was spending time with his family. Chuck also loved to read, enjoying the works of Depression Era authors. In respect of Chuck’s wishes, cremation will be ordered. In lieu of services, family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Weaver Ridge on Saturday, February 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the National Parkinson Foundation, the American Diabetes Association or the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
