Obituary for David Armstrong
David Ferris Armstrong, 62, of Washington, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at his home with his family by his side. He was born on December 1, 1953 to Jimmy and Shirley (Taylor) Ballard. They both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Michael. Surviving are his wife, Sonjia Armstrong, two sisters, Peggy (Denny) Tresenriter and Sandra Taylor. Also surviving is one brother, Gerald (Cheryl) Armstrong, two stepdaughters, Lisa Norman, and Dawn (Rodney) Thurston, one nephew, two nieces, and one grandson. Dave attended Washington Community High School and joined the United States Air Force in 1975. He served as a Senior Master Sergeant for the Illinois Air National Guard’s 182nd Airlift Wing in Peoria, earning Meritorious Service medals while serving his country in several overseas deployments in Kuwait. After his retirement in 2005, Dave (never one to sit still) earned his Associates Degree in Nursing in 2008 and worked as a dialysis nurse until his second retirement in 2015. Dave enjoyed many hobbies, including scuba diving, spending time at the shooting range with his friends, completing home improvement projects, and riding motorcycles with Sonjia and friends. In 1986, Dave built his own ultralight glider and was a member of the Heart of Illinois Ultralights Flyer Club. In recent years, Dave taught himself to play the guitar, mandolin, and banjo, and developed a fondness for playing music for his church. He absolutely loved to talk and share stories with family and friends, and was a devoted grandfather who would spend hours building Thomas the Train tracks and collecting coins with his grandson. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13 at New Hope Community Church, 510 Woodland Knolls Road, Germantown Hills. Pastor Rob Schertz will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Cremation will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tazewell Animal Protection Society (TAPS) in Pekin, Illinois.
