Obituary for Elaine Velde
Elaine Fonville Velde, 93, of Pekin, Illinois, passed away on July 4, 2013, surrounded by her family. Elaine was born April 28, 1920 in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Howard and Zeta Fonville. Elaine had one brother, Paul Fonville, who was killed in WW II. Elaine graduated from Ardmore High School. She also graduated from Oklahoma A & M prior to joining the Civil Service at the beginning of WW II. Elaine was a stay at home Mom and spent her entire married life in Pekin. Elaine enjoyed over 50 years of Civic and Philanthropic involvement. She helped to organize the Pekin Hospital League where she was a volunteer and Board Member for many years. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Peoria Opera Board and The Youth Farm. Elaine was a member of the GW Chapter of the P.E.O. for over 50 years. While raising her family, she was a regular volunteer in the PTA, Pekin Park District Little League, Union Mission Biddy Basketball and Youth Football. Elaine regularly drove cancer patients for treatment. Elaine had a deep commitment to her faith and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and the Altar Guild. Elaine had a true zest for life. She and her husband of 48 years, Frederick “Fritz” Velde, loved to socialize and entertain with family and friends. Elaine and Fritz were members of the Pekin Country Club, Peoria Country Club, and the Creve Coeur Club. Her true pride and enjoyment were her husband and three sons, whom she often referred to as “The Four Men of Her Life”. She often called her life and marriage with Fritz as “Euphoric”. Elaine is survived by her three sons: Frederick P. Velde (Carol), Springfield, IL, Frank F. Velde (Beth), Blounts Creek, NC and John H. Velde (Elena), Peoria, IL, her five grandchildren, Anna Daly (Tim), River Forest, IL, Frank A. Velde, Telluride, CO, Paula Velde, Springfield, IL, Patrick Velde, Blounts Creek, NC, Sara Velde, Chicago, IL and two great-grandchildren, Norah and Keenan Daly, River Forest, IL. She is also survived by one cousin, Lloyd Lane, Estes Park, CO, two nephews, Richard Bergstresser (Jean), Greenwich, CT and Kenneth Berstresser, San Francisco, CA and one niece, Ann Bergstresser, Sausalito, CA. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick J. “Fritz” Velde, parents Howard and Zeta Fonville , Ardmore, OK and brother, Paul Fonville Ardmore, OK. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin. The Rev. Brian T. Kellington will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Memorial Funds may be sent to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pekin, IL and Pekin Memorial Hospital.
