Ernest J. McDonald 89, of Cortland, IL formerly of Pekin, IL passed away Friday, June 5, 2026, at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, IL.
He was born December 1, 1936, in Peoria, IL and was the son of James and Dolores (Massa) McDonald.
Ernest graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1954 and proudly served in the Air Force National Guard. He continued his education at DeVry University before earning his associate degree from Illinois Central College, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
On August 23, 1958, Ernest married the love of his life, Jean Wasiloski, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, IL. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 62 years of marriage before Jean's passing on November 19, 2020. Their enduring love and devotion to one another served as an inspiration to all who knew them.
Ernest dedicated many years of his career as a laboratory chemist, working for companies including Corn Products, Commonwealth Edison, and Nestlé. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a devoted Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, along with the American Legion Post 119 in Largo, FL giving generously of his time and talents in service to others.
Ernest embraced life with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a joyful spirit. Known affectionately on the golf course as “Easy E,” he loved spending time outdoors and sharing laughter with friends. He could often be found at the DeKalb Airport, contentedly watching planes take off and land, a simple pleasure that never lost its appeal. An avid bowler and softball player, Ernest also had a deep love for music. He played both the saxophone and ukulele, enjoyed jazz, and proudly performed in the marching band.
Whether camping with family, square dancing with his beloved wife, or enjoying live music at Fatty’s Pub and Grille in DeKalb on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, Ernest found joy in the people and experiences around him. His kindness, energy, and love of life left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him, and he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
