Obituary for Eva "Eve" M. Smith
Eva “Eve” M. Smith 77, of Pekin passed away at 2:09 p.m. Friday January 18, in the Emergency Room of Pekin Hospital. Eve was born to Anthony and Stella McCaskey August 22, 1930 in Springfield, IL. She married Julian J. Smith on October 7, 1950 at Blessed Sacrament church in Springfield. He survives. Eve was employed at the Pekin Public Library for twenty-five years, retiring in 1992 as business manager. She was a former member of the Pekin Country Club and was awarded the YWCA Outstanding Woman award. Mrs. Smith loved to garden and was an accomplished grower of roses. She showed price winning blooms in local, district and national competition of the American Rose Society. Eve was a member of the Greater Peoria and McLean County Rose Societies. She was a judge of roses and in 2001 was cited as Outstanding Judge by the Illinois-Indiana District of ARS. She shared her knowledge and interest of rose culture with many others as a Consulting Rosarian of ARS. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for forty-five years and a member of the Council of Catholic Women. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, sons, Richard J. Smith of Santa Rosa, Texas, Mark (and Mary) Smith of Pekin, and daughter, Stephanie (and Brad) Spencer of Harsens Island, Michigan. Also surviving are two sisters Mary (and Richard) Grega and Antoinette (and John) Weis both of Springfield, and five grandchildren, Christopher Smith, of Dallas, Texas, Anthony Smith of Pekin, Genevieve Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Matthew Smith of Pekin and Teresa Spencer of Harsens Island, Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A funeral mass will be held for Eve on Tuesday January 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. Father Timothy Nolan and Deacon Charles Murray will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in St, Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin.
