Obituary for Frances "Fran" Fanning
Frances Hughes Fanning, 87, of Peoria died at 2:45 pm on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Washington Christian Village with her family by her side. She was born on May 18, 1924, in Riverside, Illinois to Howard and Maude (Underhill) Hughes. She married Aubrey Fanning on September 18, 1945 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. “Fran” as she was known to all who knew her well, was predeceased by her son, David Fanning in 2000, and by her husband of 64 years, Aubrey, in 2009. Frances is survived by her daughter, Linda A. Koos of Princeton, NJ; son, Brian Fanning of Iowa City, IA; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Greg Russell of Peoria with whom she resided; daughter-in-law, Carol Fanning of Danielson, CT; grandsons, Clifford Koos, Michael Fanning, Alex Fanning and Cody Russell; granddaughters, Melissa Fanning, Elizabeth Fanning, Nicole Russell and Kelly Russell; and one great-granddaughter, Leah Fanning. Also surviving are her sister, Shirley Scott of New Buffalo, MI; brother, Howard Hughes of Hallandale, FL; niece, Arleen Speidel; nephew, Mark Scott, and many other loving nieces and nephews. Frances was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed sitting on the sidelines watching all her grandchildren participate in sports and was a proud Richwoods soccer fan. During World War II she worked at The Northern Trust Company in Chicago and later worked for Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. Upon their move to Connecticut in 1974 she was the Administrative Assistant of Mystic Color Lab in Mystic, CT and as the church secretary for Calvary Episcopal Church in Stonington, CT. She was so full of life and enjoyed people that in her later years she enjoyed working part-time in a bridal shop and for a stock broker in Summerville, SC. Mrs. Fanning has gone full circle in her 87 years and lived in many places during her circle of life; Washington, Idaho, Iowa, Virginia, Connecticut, retirement in South Carolina, and back to Illinois where she passed into God’s hands. Cremation rites will be accorded, and her final resting place will be in the registered Historic Fanning Cemetery located in Ledyard, CT with graveside services at a later date. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at the home of her daughter, Cathy Russell, of 7515 N. Edgewild Drive, Peoria from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2012. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to her great-granddaughter, Leah Fanning at any PNC Bank branch or to Cathy Russell.
