Obituary for Gertrude Garretts
Gertrude S. Garretts, 88, of Canton, IL passed away Friday September 21, 2012 at Sunset Manor in Canton, IL. Gertrude was born April 1, 1924, in Portland, North Dakota, the daughter of Harold Gulbranson and Alma (Brend) Gulbranson. She married Vernon A. Garretts on June 15, 1946 in Chicago, IL. Surviving are her husband Vernon; two daughters, Deborah Staugler of Canton, IL, Theresa Pearson of Marion, IL and one son, William Garretts of Bryons Road, Maryland; one sister, Dorothy McGowen of Colusa, CA; two brothers, Raymond and Darrel Gulbranson of Mayville, North Dakota, also seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her parents; four sisters, Margaret, Katheran, Barbera and Lorreta; one brother, Jerry Gulbranson and one grandson, Justin Boyer. Gertrude graduated as class Valedictorian from Mayville, North Dakota High School in 1942 and worked for the U.S. Navy during WWII in San Francisco, CA in 1943 thru 1944. Following that she worked for the Railway Express in Chicago, IL. Gertrude obtained an Associate of Arts degree from Spoon River College at age 65. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, IL and the American Legion Post 16 Auxiliary where she was a past President. Cremation has been accorded and a graveside service and burial of cremains will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
