Obituary for Joan Aldus
Joan Rose Aldus, passed away peacefully at 5 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2017 at the age of 87 in Morton, Illinois. She was born April 1, 1929 to Thomas and Martha Von Drake in Galesburg, Illinois. Jo married Richard Earl Aldus in 1950 and later divorced. Richard preceded her death on May 8, 2003. They had four children who are still surviving, Steven Michael Aldus, Debra Lee Ford, James Dean Aldus, Barbara Jo Hall; from her children Jo has 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving are her brother, Jerry Von Drake of Peoria, Illinois and her sister, Darlene Mayer of Jacksonville, Arkansas; from her siblings Jo has 4 nieces / nephews and 3 great nieces / nephews. Jo was a switchboard operator at the CB&Q Burlington Northern and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in Galesburg, Illinois. She also worked as a switchboard operator at the Cottage Hospital and at the Hotel Custer in Galesburg, Illinois. She later worked at Walmart in Princeton and Galesburg before retiring. In her younger years Jo loved family time swimming at Lake Storey and Lake Bracken and spending time in the sun. She taught swimming for a few years at the City Pool in Galesburg. Jo loved bowling. Her team league won the State Championships. Mom and her partner also won the All Galesburg Doubles Bowling Team Championship. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and reading romantic novels and westerns in her free time. Jo was a very outgoing person who never knew a stranger. She was loved by many and treasured by her family. We are saddened by the loss of Jo, but we are also grateful her suffering is at an end. A special thanks from Jo goes out to Steve's sister-in-law, Tina Cramer, who helped to take care of her and made the last couple years easier. Tina's daughters, Jacquelyn West and Isabella (Bella) Abbott know her as "Grandma Jo" and will greatly miss her. Cremation has been accorded and private family services will be held. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society in her name.
