Obituary for Joanie Beverly McWhirter
Joan “Joanie” Beverly McWhirter, 72, of Peoria entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 5:00pm on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Kindred Hospital surrounded by her family.
Joan was born on April 28, 1944 to Charles and Louise (Hinton) Curtwright in Peoria IL. Joan attended Canton area schools graduating from Canton Senior High in 1962. She later attended Bradley University.
Joan spent her career in the financial services industry working at Chicago Metropolitan Insurance Company, First Federal Savings and 33 years at Citizen Equity First Credit Union as a teller and branch manager.
Joan accepted Christ as her Savior as a child and was a faithful and active member of Church of Christ Northwest. She assisted in Vacation Bible School and taught midweek Bible Study at Galena Park. Joan and her husband Gary also ran the church food pantry which served thousands of people over the years.
Joan volunteered for a number of organizations over the years including Habitat for Humanity. She loved watching the NFL especially the Denver Broncos while talking on the phone with her brothers. She enjoyed tai chi and loved to read. She also had a love for Asian artwork and Shar Pei dogs.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents and one stepson Rick McWhirter.
Joan leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 20 years, Gary McWhirter, two daughters, Dawn Jordan Jones of Avon, IN and Nichole Jordan of Indianapolis, IN, two stepsons, Terry (Marie) McWhirter of Brimfield, IL and Rodney McWhirter of O’Fallon, MO, three grandchildren, Calise Jordan and Cagney Jordan, both of Indianapolis, IN, and Donald Jones, Jr. of Avon, IN, her brothers Charles Curtwright and Bradford Curtwright, both of Denver, CO, nieces Beth Curtwright of Peoria, IL and Tamara of Quincy, IL, her best friend Marlene Schmidt of over 30 years, and a host of step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
The Memorial Service will be Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 10am at the Church of Christ Northwest, 7722 North Allen Road, Peoria, IL. Interment will be at the family vault at Swan Lake Cemetery
