Obituary for John A. "Sunny" Berry
John A “Sonny” Berry 77, of East Peoria passed away at his home on Thursday May 21, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. John was born July 26th, 1931 to Marion DallaRiva and Michael Berry. He married JoAnn Wallace on April 18th 1959, she survives along with his children; Michael A. Berry, Karen (Doug) Brooks and Debbie (Steve) Avery all of East Peoria, brothers; James (Rosie) of Bartonville, Dave (Karen) of Creve Coeur and Alan (Linda) of Phoenix, AZ, sisters; Dolores (Roger) Goodwin of Elmwood and Alice (Mike) Street of Phoenix, AZ, grandchildren; Tara, Eric, Jessica, Brandon, Andrew, Joshua, McKenzie and Grace, great granddaughters; Jordynn and Josselyn and his many nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death. John attended St. Pat’s grade school, graduated from Spaulding High School, class of 49, served 4 years in the Navy during the Korean War as a Corpsman, was a supervisor at A&P warehouse for 9 years, was a supervisor at the Kroger warehouse for 31 years, retiring in 1996. John loved his sports, the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Bears and was an avid Elvis Presley fan, as all his friends knew. He was known as “Dad” to the neighborhood kids and some of the young men who worked for him. You never saw John riding in his convertible without his dogs; Babe, Tabby and Heidi. He was also known as the “Candy Man” who gave out mints wherever he went. Cremation will be accorded and a Memorials Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday May 26, at the First Christian Church 604 Groveland Ave in Creve Coeur and a Celebration will be held immediately following the service at the Grotto at Ault Park on Highview Rd. across from Armstrong Grade School in East Peoria. Memorials may be made to T.A.P.S. 100 Taps Ln. Pekin, IL 61554. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Pekin/Peoria is assisting the family with arrangements.
