Obituary for John "Sonny" Hill
John “Sonny” Albert Hill, 80, of Pekin passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at OSF St. Frances Medical Center in Peoria. He was born January 12, 1937 in Pekin to Orrin A. and Kathryn Gienado Hill. He married Jorita McClanahan July 4, 1960 in Cusseta, GA; she survives. He is also survived by his son, John W. (Rhonda) Hill of Seattle, WA; son-in-law, Mike Biga; grandchildren, Salvatore Latona, Tony Latona, Carmen Latona, Meredithe Hill, Mallorie Hill, Avery Rose Biga; sister, Kay Cook; brother, Jerry (Glenna) Hill; numerous nieces and nephews and honorary son, David Kline. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Marie Hill; granddaughter, Katrina Kemper; brother, Orrin W. Hill and his parents. Sonny served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960 with the rank SFM3 and served in the UDT as a Frog Man. Then went to work after serving for the Chicago CNW Railroad, was a welder at Le Tourneau Westinghouse, retired after 40 years as a Master Welder from Komatsu was a member of 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Illinois State Rifle Association, NRA, National Wildlife Turkey Foundation, American Legion, Spring Bay Trap and Skeet Club, President of Tri-County Duck and Geese Forever. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He also made many trips to the Rosebud Indian Reservation in SD, supplying them with sewing machines, hymnals, clothing and food for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin where he will have a funeral mass on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow the mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin with Military Honors. Father Michael Andrejek will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Abts Mortuary in Pekin from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 4:15 p.m. Memorials may be made to an education fund for his granddaughters; Meredithe, Mallorie and Avery at Heartland Bank and Trust.
