Obituary for Katherine Orth
Katherine “Kathy” L. Orth, age 56, a lifelong resident of Peoria IL, has passed away on May 31, 2016. Born on July 27, 1959, she was the daughter of Edward G. Orth and Margaret “Peg” E. Kamp Orth. Kathy’s Parents were married on August 23rd 1958 at St. Thomas Church in Peoria. Kathy is preceded in death by her Mother, Margret “Peg” Orth and a sister, Karen L. Cotton. Survivors include her father, Edward G. Orth; one sister, Kristine L. Stayton (husband Kerry); 2 nieces, LeeAnne Cotton and Kerstin Stayton and one great-niece, Acelya Richardson; and several cousins. When Kathy was born, there were few existing programs for serving individuals with developmental disabilities. Kathy’s parents were at the forefront of this movement towards better services. The Peoria Association for Retarded Citizens (PARC) now know as EPIC, was created to provide support to those with disabilities. Fortunately for Kathy, she was able to benefit from PARC’s programs. As PARC grew, Kathy attended Robert A. Jamieson School. She participated in the school choir and enjoyed Special Olympics, as well as bowling, basketball, swimming, riding her bike, swinging and coloring. As Kathy grew older, there was need for a more independent life and one where she could interact with others her own age. The Smiley Living Center was established to meet that need and Kathy lived there until the group homes and apartments were established. Our dear Kathy touched so many lives in so many special ways during her time with us. Kathy will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors. On Saturday, June 11th, at 10:00 AM, a Memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas Church of Peoria, 904 E. Lake Ave. At 12:00 a Remembrance Luncheon will be held at the First Baptist Church of Peoria 411 West Lake Ave. Rather than flowers, donations may be made to EPIC, 1913 W. Townline Rd. Peoria, IL 61612 in memory of Kathy Orth.
