Obituary for Marguerite N. Sutherland
Marguerite Naramore Sutherland, 102, of Peoria died on January 22, 2018. Preceded in death by her husband, James E. Sutherland, parents Frederick Joseph and Amanda Caroline Naramore, sisters Dolores M. Naramore and Evelyn C. O’Brien, brothers John Naramore and Frederick J. Naramore, sister-in-law Elaine B. Naramore, and brother-in-law Gilbert O’Brien. Survived by nieces Jeanne N. Lyles (Bert) and Barbara L. Naramore (Steve Cox), nephews Frederick J. Naramore, Jr. (Jane) and Raymond G. Naramore (Marietta), and eight great nieces and nephews (Carrie, Christina, Rebecca, Thomas, Rick, Frank, Will, and Rio).

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Marge worked there until she enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. Marge and Jim married in 1947 and moved to Peoria in 1950. Owners of Sutherland Company, they worked as management consultants to private industry and the military in the early years of electronic data processing. Marge was active in the Chamber of Commerce, a founder and active member of the Peoria Orchid Society, a supporter and former board president of Peoria Friendship House, and a founder of the Westminster Infant Care Center. An elder and longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Marge also served as the Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Great Rivers for 10 years and on the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (USA). While in her 90s, she founded and led a poetry study group at Lutheran Hillside Village. Marge loved both Bradley University basketball and travel, visiting every state but Alaska, as well as every continent but Antarctica.

Marge’s keen intellect, optimism, faith, and concern for others were the hallmarks of her life. She made lifelong friends wherever she went, and was committed to sharing her good fortune and living her values.

Interment with military honors will be at Camp Butler in Springfield, IL on Friday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria on Saturday, March 10 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held at the church after the service.

The family thanks Yvonne Buchanan and the staff of Lutheran Hillside Village Care Center for their extraordinary and loving care of Marge in her final years. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Westminster Infant Care Center, Peoria Friendship House, Lutheran Hillside Village Foundation, or OSF Hospice.
