Obituary for Mary Lou Harman

Mary Lou Harman, 78 of Glasford passed away Friday, January 8, 2016 at Country Comfort Assisted Living in Elmwood. She was born in Spring Bay on December 28, 1937 to Ray and Ida Zilch. Born on her family farm, she was delivered by her uncle, Dr. Herman Eichhorn. She married Lewis Harman on October 6, 1957. Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Lewis; her sons Douglas (Dawn) Harman of Trivoli, Gregory (Debbie) Harman of Germantown Hills, daughter Shelley (Greg) Spencer of Peoria; eight grandchildren, Kostas, Joel, Reid, Katelyn (Josh) Ely, Grant (Megan) Harman, Chloe, Drew, and Nate; and one sister Katherine Curless of Metamora. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Eileen Berry and Evelyn Schabinger. She was a co-owner and broker of the Harman Insurance Agency in Glasford. Mary Lou was a member of the Glasford United Methodist Church. It was there that she founded and led a Bible study, sewing group making lap blankets and walker bags for area nursing home residents. She loved planning the Zilch reunions, so she could see her many nieces and nephews. Mary Lou also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafts and cooking. Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family was everything to her, and she was everything to her family. Mary Lou’s children and grandchildren would like to give a special thank you to her husband Lewis, for his care and devotion to her, making it possible for her to stay in her beloved home until her last few days. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Glasford United Methodist Church at 207 E. Fourth St. Glasford, followed by a funeral service at 12 p.m. There will be a lunch provided at the church following the service. Cremation rites have been accorded with a private graveside service occurring at a later date. Memorials may be made to The Glasford Senior Center, Timber Hollis Fire Department or a charity of the donor’s choice.
