Obituary for Maurice Jenkins
Maurice Leon Jenkins, 79, of Peoria formerly of Canton passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Heights Nursing Home in Peoria Heights following a long illness. He was born August 3, 1936 in Canton to Charles “Sam” and Helen Venovich Jenkins. He married his love and caretaker for many years, Lona (Carter) Hughes on May 10, 2002, she survives. He is also survived by his daughter and pride and joy, Connie Kelly of Texas; son, Chris Jenkins of Arizona; five grandchildren, Jason Clark, Nate Kelly, Jessica Kelly, Julie Kelly, Tommy Kelly; his only sibling, his sister, Barbara (Jerry) Vanderheydt of Pekin, who was such a joy to him. He loved her and was so proud of her. She and Jerry visited him regularly and took care of him when his wife would be gone; two step-children and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Chuck Jenkins whom worked with him whenever possible until his passing and grandson, Michael Kelly. Maurie served in the U.S. Air Force for four years as a jet mechanic where he developed his love of building cars and motorcycles. He built racing cars and bikes and funny ones. He was a self employed painter and painted most of Canton at least once. He had a knack of being able to build or fix anything. Maurie found Christ thru his long time friend, Harvey Evans, who is, along with his wife, Connie, officiating Maurie’s funeral. Cremation has been accorded and a graveside service will be held at the Dunfermline Cemetery in Canton on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. where he will be accorded military honors. A pot luck will be held at the American Legion in Canton, IL from Noon to 3 p.m. All are welcome. The family is asking that in lieu of flowers; please send memorial contributions to Peoria Area Intergroup Alcoholics Anonymous.
