Myrtle Ellen Walter, 93 of Peoria went home to be with Jesus on April 16, 2011 at 6:15 a.m. after passing away at Riverview in East Peoria. She was born in Bristol, England on March 7, 1918. Her parents were Albert & Gwendoline Walter. She had a younger sister who died of an illness in 1927. Myrtle’s father died of an illness when Myrtle was eight years old.

Myrtle loved animals. She had a cat named James and also had dogs. She started knitting when she was eight years old. She also decided at the age of eight that she wanted to become a nurse so she could help people. Her mom died when Myrtle was 23 and a year later Myrtle became a nurse at the age of 24. Myrtle worked at a prison for 11 months, then moved to the U.S in 1967. She moved to Chicago and worked as a nurse there for a couple of years. From there she came to Peoria, moved to Glen Oak Towers and was a nurse at OSF St. Francis from 1971 until her retirement in 1982.

Myrtle had a great sense of humor and was a caring person. She always had a smile on her face. Cremation has been accorded with burial at a later date. A memorial service for Myrtle will take place Friday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the Glen Oak Towers Community Room.
