Obituary for Peter "Pete" James Moreschi

Peter “Pete” James Moreschi, of Pekin passed away with his family by his side on September 28, 2024, at Cornerstone Health Care Center in Peoria Heights. He was 81.

Pete was born May 27, 1943 in Pekin, the youngest child of Elmer and Mary (Lorengo) Moreschi. On October 2, 1976, he married Julie A. Zank in Pekin; she survives.

He is also survived by his three children and their respective spouses, Kristi (Richard) Veldman of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Danielle (Erik) Reader of Peoria, and Matthew (Elizabeth) Moreschi of Bloomington; grandchildren Amanda (Samet) Akgül, Aaron (Becca) Phelps, Abbey (Matt) LaDuke, Andrew Veldman, Mila Moreschi and Margot Moreschi; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Elmer “Sonny” Moreschi; and his granddogs, Rudy and Champ.

Pete graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1961. He briefly attended Western Illinois University in Macomb before moving to downtown Chicago to work as a draftsman. Eventually, life took him back to Pekin where he held various jobs including roles at the City of Pekin, Pekin Distributing, and also at Continental Can until its closing. In 1988, Pete began a job at Mitsubishi Motors, where he enjoyed a lengthy career and was a proud member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). In addition to his work at Mitsubishi, he was the owner and operator of Moreschi Home Improvement Co., where he did work for many homeowners around Central Illinois.

Pete was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pekin. He was known for his commitment to the Knights of Columbus where he volunteered at various functions including many “First Friday” and Lenten fish fries. Proud of his Italian heritage, Pete was also a member of the Italian American Club of Pekin, where he served a tenure as president and built lifelong friendships. In his free time, Pete enjoyed duck and goose hunting, reading, and traveling — most notably to Yosemite National Park, New York City, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Oregon, and to several Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes throughout the Midwest. He also looked forward to an occasional fishing trip to Wisconsin. For many years, Pete and Julie enjoyed seeing musical theatre productions, especially at The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. He was a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. But, above all, Pete was happiest when spending time with his family and his granddogs, Lulu and Max. He will be remembered for his down-to-Earth nature, his work ethic, his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, and his remarkable luck when it came to “winning” scratch-offs.

Cremation has been accorded. At Pete’s request, no services will be held.

Memorial Donations may be made in Pete’s name to Pekin Public Library, 301 South 4th St., Pekin, IL 61554

The family has entrusted Abts Mortuary in Pekin with his arrangements. Online condolences may be made at abtsmortuary.com
