Obituary for Richard Stalling
Richard Bettin Stalling, 73, of Peoria, IL, died Sunday, June 12, 2011 at his residence. He was born to the late Bettin and Ruth Stalling, November 9, 1937, in Washington D.C. Richard graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1954, received a BA in Psychology from Northwestern University in 1959, a Masters in Psychology from Roosevelt University in 1965, and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1969. While studying in Chicago, he met Judith Stalling.  Together they moved to Honolulu and were married in the Iolani Palace in 1965.  In 1969 they moved to Peoria, IL after Richard accepted a position as a Professor of Psychology at Bradley University. Richard taught at Bradley University for 38 years and retired in 2007.  While at Bradley, he served as Chair of the Psychology Department for 8 years, represented the Psychology Department in the University Senate, and worked with Vice President Gary Anna and Councilman Roger Worman to create the entrance to Bradley University. He was an active member of his community serving several organizations including the Central Illinois Landmark Foundation, the Greenway Project, and as President of the Moss Bradley Residential Association where he led the process to preserve the ornamental lighting on Moss Avenue.  In addition, Richard reviewed restaurants for the West Bluff Word under the pseudonym Melvin Shirver. Richard is survived by his spouse, Judith Stalling, and two children, Samantha Stalling (Amber Hawk Swanson), of Chicago, IL and Vanessa Stalling (Sean Graney), of Chicago, IL. Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 30, at 4:00pm, at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 3000 W. Richwoods Blvd. A scholarship to honor him is being established.  Contributions in memory of Dr. Stalling may be directed to Bradley University. Contributions to other organizations chosen by the donor are also appreciated.
