Obituary for Stephen L. Bowman
Col. Stephen L. Bowman (Ret.) 63, died September 18, 2009 at his parents home in Canton. He was born September 7, 1946 in Galesburg to Bob and Ginny Bowman. He graduated from Canton High School in 1964, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1968 and Duke University in 1986 with a M.A. and PHD in Military History. He served in Viet Nam as an Airborne Ranger where he was awarded the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. During his Army career he taught history at West Point, was director of the Military History Institute and Deputy Brigade Commander in Berlin, Germany. As a military historian he authored and co-authored four books and contributed to many others. After retirement from the Army, he moved to Berlin and thoroughly enjoyed leading tours of European Battlefields. He is survived by his wife Gabriele, children; Scott, Megan and partner Jackie, Lee and wife Shalyn and grandsons Robbie and Kyler. He is also survived by his parents, siblings; Jackie of Bloomington, Judy (Harvey) of Chico, CA, Chuck (Judy) of Canton, Dennis (Teri) of Edmond, OK and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church in Canton on Saturday September 26, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service also at the church. Burial of cremains will be at a later date at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society to further research of pancreatic cancer or to the Berlin U.S. Military Veterans Association.
