Obituary for Terry Brecher
Terry S. Brecher, 72, of Pekin passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at his residence. He was born May 5, 1944 in Pekin to Alfred and Norma Arnett Brecher. He graduated from Pekin Community High School, where he excelled at sports. Terry went on to play baseball at Western Illinois University, where he was a 1967 NAIA All American. He later received a WIU Alumni Achievement Award, and he was inducted into the Western Illinois University Hall of Fame in 1992. After graduating from college, Terry was drafted by the Washington Senators in the 41st round of the 1967 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. After trying his hand at professional baseball, he returned home to Pekin. Terry taught and coached at both Edison and Broadmoor Junior High. He was also the head baseball coach at Pekin Community High School. In 1979 he was hired as the recreation director at the Pekin Union Mission where he stayed until his retirement in 2009. Terry coached, mentored, and influenced thousands of kids in his lifetime. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. Terry is survived by his mother, Norma Brecher of Pekin; daughters, Christine (Bart) Conner of Washington, Amy (Deron) Magruder of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Mason and Zac Conner of Washington, Olivia and Tucker Magruder of St. Louis, MO; brother, James (Marilyn) Brecher of Florida; sister, Kathleen Guidi of Pekin; niece, Bree (Josh) Roberts and nephews, Jakob Brecher and Philip Brecher. He is also survived by Diane Brecher and Paul Guidi. Terry was preceded in death by his father and brother, Lee. Per Terry’s request cremation has been accorded and a private family service was held. Memorials may be made to the Pekin Union Mission Sports Program or Tazewell Animal Protective Society in his name.
