Obituary for Vernon Garretts
Vernon A. Garretts, 95, of Canton, IL passed away Monday, May 9, 2016 at Graham Hospital in Canton, IL. Vernon was born March 22, 1921 in Peoria, IL, the son of William F. Garretts and Ella (Knebel) Garretts. He married Gertrude (Gulbranson) Garretts on June 15, 1946 in Chicago, IL; she preceded him in death September 21, 2012. He was also preceded in death by is parents; sister, Jeanine Gottchalk; brother, Bill Garretts and grandson, Justin Boyer. Surviving are his two daughters, Deborah Staugler of Canton, IL, Theresa Pearson of Marion, IL; one son, William Garretts of Bryons Road, Maryland also seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Vernon retired from Garretts Construction Inc. in 1984 as its President; he was also a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois. During WWII he served as a member of the First Naval Construction Battalion serving in the South Pacific during the years 1942 and 1943, in 1944 he was selected to attend the Navy V12 Program were he attended the University of Northwestern. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canton, IL and the American Legion Post 16 where he was a past Commander. He also was a past member of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. Cremation has been accorded and a Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church in Canton with a luncheon following the service.
