Obituary for Virgil W. Vogel

Virgil W Vogel passed away in his home on September 20, 2025. He was born on September 7, 1960, in Pekin, Illinois to Virgil and Wilanna Vogel.

He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil J Vogel, as well as Anna and Mina’s mother, Julie Carpenter.

He is survived by his loving mother, Wilanna (Jim) Vogel Donahue; his two daughters, Anna (Michael) McMahan and Mina (Jack Anthony) McIntire; three grandchildren, Theodora McMahan, Leo and Noah McIntire. He also leaves behind his four siblings, Teresa M Vogel, Lela (Kurt) Vogel-Kloster, Vincent W Vogel and Andrea (Ian) Morrison; and several nieces and nephews, Vincent G Tutorino, Gianna (Brendin) Wood, Jacqueline (Saurabh) Morrison Savara, Gina (Kyeongtae) Kim, Lucas A Morrison.

With a special gift for gardening and landscaping, he was known for his ability to transform ordinary gardens into beautiful, vibrant outdoor havens. Virgil also had a passion for art; he created works that offered a window into his unique perspective. His artistic legacy extended beyond his home, as his work was exhibited in art shows and galleries across Pekin, Peoria, Chicago, and Detroit.

He was a 1978 Graduate of Pekin Community High School and attended class at the Chicago Art Institute and Illinois Central College. His talent for transforming the natural world with his hands led him to a career as a horticulturist for the Pekin Park District, Luthy Botanical Gardens and Kellogg Golf Course until he retired.

Friends and loved ones are encouraged to visit one of the many beautiful gardens around Peoria and Pekin that he created and tended to over the years. You are sure to find his special touches still there. In the spirit of Virgil, spend some time among the flowers and watch the birds fly from tree to tree remembering him how he would like to be.

A private graveside service will be held at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Andrejek.

The family has entrusted Abts Mortuary in Pekin with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at abtsmortuary.com
